How To Make Hair Selection in Photoshop (Part 1)
There is a lot of technique to make a hair selection in Photoshop. But definitely, never use Lasoo Tools, Magic wand, or Pen tool when you want to make a selection of the hair, many people said if make selection of the hair is very difficult and consume a lot of time work.
So, I want to share to you starting from the easiest way into more advanced tutorial about the hair selection.
Based on my experience, actually there is a three ways to make a hair selection for a better result, so I am separated in three part :
Part 1 : Hair Selection using a Multiply Effect (Easiest)
Part 2 : Hair Selection using Extract Tool (Moderate)
Part 3 : Hair Selection using Channels (Advanced)
Let’s get started,
Part 1 : Photoshop Hair Selection Tutorial Using a Multiply Effect.
This is the easiest ways to make a hair selection without have to make a selection of the hair. Confuse? Here is the tutorial.
Step 1 : Browse an Image Containing a Person With a Hair
You can browse the image from the free stock photo resources or you can buy it from a premium stock photos.
I am using this image for this tutorial :

Step 2 : Duplicate the layer into 2 different layer and keep the background white.
To duplicate the layer, you can click on the layer and then “Right Click >> Duplicate Layer…” or you can use keyboard shortcut “Ctrl + J”
Do it twice
Then keep the background color with a white color, so you will get this preview :

Step 3 : Input any background image to your Photoshop , for example I am use this image :

Input the image above the Background Layer, just like this example :

Then change the layer 1 normal mode to Multiply mode

Step 4 : Select the “layer 1 Copy” and then make a selection on the body of the girl using Pent Tool or Lasso Tool

Note : You just need to make a selection in the Body of the girl, ignore the selection in the hair part because it’s so difficult to make a selection using Pen Tool / Lasso Tool

If you’re done, you can doing “Right Click >> Make Selection”

Then Click on the “Layer Mask Icon” in the bottom of the Layers Pallete.

Then, you will got this result :

Step 5 : Finalizing the Correction
You can see in the image have a bad result in some part of the hair, so you need to make a correction on the image

Make a correction using “Layer Mask” in both layer (layer 1 and layer 1 copy).
You can use “Brush Tool” in the layer mask and try to experiment by using a Black and White color when you brush the both layer.

This is the final results :

Note : Please remember if the result using this technique is not too good because some part of the hair looking black.
Hope you enjoy the tutorial.
